Municipal Court Warrants in Benzie County
Michigan organizes its trial courts into circuit, district, and probate branches. Cities are allowed to build their own municipal courts. Many across the state do. Benzie County has none. The official court map for the county shows the 85th District Court, the 19th Judicial Circuit Court, and Probate Court, and nothing besides those three. That single fact shapes everything else. A parking citation, a blight ordinance violation, and a speeding ticket all land before the same judge at the 85th District Court, which also handles traffic civil infractions, misdemeanors, small claims, and general civil cases up to $25,000.
Benzie County Municipal Infraction Cases
A Benzie County municipal civil infraction is not a crime. It usually involves a local ordinance, such as a parking rule or a blight rule, and it runs through civil-infraction procedure rather than the criminal docket. A misdemeanor ordinance case is the opposite: it is criminal from the start. The difference shapes what happens if the citation goes unanswered. In a civil infraction, the court can enter a default judgment, and the Michigan benchbook on civil infractions lays out that step in detail. A criminal case that sits unanswered looks very different. So before you decide what to do in Benzie County, ask the court which kind of file you are in. The chapter on entering a default judgment for failure to answer a citation or appear for a scheduled hearing is published by the Michigan courts.
That chapter is the clearest official account of what happens after a Benzie County municipal civil infraction goes unanswered.
Which Benzie County Cities Have Municipal Courts
None of the incorporated places in Benzie County runs a municipal court or posts a warrant lookup. The table below shows where each one sends a court question instead.
| City or Village | Municipal Court | Where Cases Are Heard | Contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfort | None located | 85th District Court | 231-882-0019 |

Frankfort Police Is Not a Municipal Court
Frankfort is the only incorporated city in Benzie County. It has its own police department, reachable at 231-352-4212. A police department arrests people and writes citations. It does not set bond, recall a warrant, or close a case. Only the 85th District Court can do those things. Many readers assume a city with its own police force must have its own court too. Frankfort does not. For a police record or a service question, call the department. For the case itself, call the court. The Frankfort Police Department page lists a contact number and emergency direction, with no warrant lookup on it.
That gap is the most useful fact for a Frankfort reader. It sorts out any Benzie County municipal warrant question in one phone call.
How to Check a Municipal Court Warrant
A city case gets checked exactly like a county case. The same Benzie County court holds both files, so the same steps apply.
- Search the case in MiCOURT by name, citation number, or case number.
- Call the 85th District Court at 231-882-0019 and ask what the docket shows.
- Ask whether the entry is a civil infraction default, a misdemeanor failure to appear, or a warrant.
- Call the Sheriff's Office at 231-882-4484 only for service or custody routing.
Village offices cannot answer warrant questions anywhere in Benzie County. Benzonia's office keeps limited hours, Honor's clerk and treasurer keep shorter ones, and neither village posts a court portal.
Elberta and the Benzie County Sheriff Route
Elberta publishes an unusually clear routing statement. The village code enforcement page says Elberta has no local police patrol, and that Frankfort Police do not operate inside village limits. Criminal activity and emergencies go to the Benzie County Sheriff instead. That boundary changes who enforces the law. It does not change the court. An Elberta municipal civil infraction or ordinance case still belongs to the 85th District Court.
What a Municipal Court Warrant Shows
The case lives in the county district court, so the record carries that court's fields. A Benzie County warrant search returns district court data, not city court data.
| Case or Citation Number | The court file identifier, for example 2024-1234567 |
|---|---|
| Municipality | The city or village named on the citation |
| Ordinance or Charge | The local rule or offense at issue |
| Classification | Municipal civil infraction or misdemeanor |
| Issuing Court | 85th District Court, 448 Court Place, Beulah |
| Status | Pending, default, paid, recalled, or another listed status |
Benzie County City Records and Warrant Records
Three offices hold three different things, and mixing them up wastes a week. The village or city office keeps municipal records: ordinances, minutes, local permits. The county court holds the case file. The Benzie County Sheriff holds law-enforcement records. A city clerk cannot confirm a warrant, and a court clerk cannot issue a city permit. Route your question by the record you need, not by the town name printed on the notice.
Note: A municipal record request and a court case question are separate requests sent to separate offices.
No Municipal Warrant Roster in Benzie County
Benzie County keeps no public warrant roster at any of its five municipal sites, and no bond window or warrant clerk either. No amnesty day or recall event exists here. The most-wanted angle is handled on the most wanted page. That page has no official roster. A blank search anywhere still means you must call the court to check for an active warrant.
Resolving a Municipal Court Warrant
Start at the 85th District Court and ask what closes the file. A civil infraction may end with payment or a late answer. A criminal ordinance case may take an appearance, a new date, or a motion. The court's online payment page accepts eligible items, but it warns that a payment is not complete until the court approves it. Nothing there promises a payment recalls a warrant, so confirm with the clerk before assuming the matter is done.
Caution: Paying a fine is not the same as clearing a warrant. Ask the court for the docket entry that shows the matter is closed.
Benzie County City FOIA and Sheriff FOIA
Frankfort keeps its own FOIA page, complete with a request form, a cost worksheet, extension and denial paperwork, and an indigence affidavit, but it covers city records only, not court files. Sheriff records run through the Benzie County Sheriff FOIA coordinator at LEvans@Benzieco.Gov or 231-882-4484 ext. 231. For other Benzie County records, write FOIA@Benzieco.Gov or call 231-882-0558. Michigan's FOIA, 1976 PA 442, governs all three routes. Responses are due in five business days, with one possible ten business day extension. The Michigan Attorney General publishes state guidance on writing a request that holds for any FOIA route in Benzie County.
Read that guidance first. A fuzzy request is the top reason a Benzie County municipal warrant question stalls, so take a moment to be specific.
